Human Threats
Human Collaborators
Human collaborators are people who aid Variant, post-Variant, terrorist, or anti-survivor forces. They are one of the Extinction Cycle's most disturbing.

Plain-language definition
The term should be used carefully. Not every human antagonist is a collaborator. ROT soldiers, corrupt officers, raiders, and political extremists may overlap with collaboration, but the core idea is human aid to forces that destroy, enslave, transform, or feed on humanity.
First major appearance
Collaborator betrayal becomes impossible to ignore during the Plum Island fall, when human action helps the Variants penetrate what should have been one of humanity's safest refuges. The concept expands in Extinction War through ROT and in Dark Age through Azrael's New Gods.
Why it matters
Human collaborators matter because they undermine the entire logic of fortification. Walls, guns, sensors, labs, and outposts assume enemies are outside. Collaborators bring the enemy inside. They also deepen the moral horror: humans are not only victims of VX-99. Some become partners in extinction without needing to be infected.
Story evolution
Plum Island betrayal
Plum Island's fall is the crucial early collaborator wound. The island represents science, safety, and recovery. When collaborators help the enemy attack, the betrayal destroys more than a facility. It destroys confidence that any protected space can remain safe if human loyalty breaks.
ROT and biological terror
ROT is a human movement rather than a Variant cult, but it belongs in the collaborator conversation because it uses the Hemorrhage Virus as a weapon against survivors. Andrew Wood and his followers demonstrate that humans can preserve the worst tools of the apocalypse and deploy them for political control.
Connection Map
Plum Island Fall: Major betrayal. Collaborators help destroy a key refuge
ROT: Human terror movement. Uses the Hemorrhage Virus against survivors
New Gods: Late enemy state. Uses collaborators as logistics and access layer
Azrael: Command figure. Benefits from humans who serve his order
