Extinction Cycle

Timeline

Extinction Cycle Timeline

The Extinction Cycle timeline runs from the first VX-99 field catastrophe to the rebuilt nations, side-branch survivor communities, the Dark Age war, and the later New Zealand recovery crisis. Exact dates appear where the books or established chronology give them. Where a branch uses only relative placement, the entry is placed by era and marked as strongly inferred or approximate.

Full-series spoilers: This timeline connects major events, missions, deaths, transformations, and later-era consequences across the Extinction Cycle universe.

Pre-outbreak and VX-99 Origins

The earliest story layer concerns the buried VX-99 program and the choices that precede the modern Hemorrhage crisis. Extinction Red Line and the VX-99 guide provide the origin path. Confidence: strongly inferred from the prequel relationship.

Building 8 and the First Outbreak

Extinction Horizon begins the main-series disaster through Building 8, Team Ghost, and the first national response. The Building 8 mission connects the opening operation to the widening collapse. Confidence: explicit story order.

New York, Operation Liberty, and the Expanding War

Extinction Edge and Extinction Age expand the conflict through New York, military operations, survivor networks, and Variant evolution. Follow the Team Ghost guide for the unit's mission progression. Confidence: explicit series order.

Operation Extinction and the Original Endgame

Extinction Evolution, Extinction End, and the Operation Extinction guide cover the original war's later campaigns and consequences. Confidence: explicit series order.

Aftermath, ROT, and the Rebuild Years

Extinction Aftermath, Extinction Lost, and Extinction War move from immediate survival into renewed conflict and unstable reconstruction. These books bridge the original saga and the political world inherited by the later era. Confidence: explicit series order.

Dark Age

The Dark Age reading guide follows the rebuilt Allied States and the next stage of the Variant war. Its chronology is later than the original saga, while individual missions are best read in their published sequence. Confidence: explicit era placement.

Ringgold Administration Timeline: This timeline tracks Jan Ringgold's movement from wartime legitimacy to Allied States reconstruction and final legacy.

Series Chronology: Full-series spoilers. This chronology uses outbreak-relative years unless an exact date is directly supported by story material. It is designed as a chronology backbone, not a plot recap by chapter. Each entry links to relevant books, characters, groups, and lore pages.

Survival Branch Timeline Overlay: This timeline overlays the Survival branch with the main Extinction Cycle continuity using existing story continuity.

Variant Evolution Timeline: This timeline follows the enemy from VX-99 subjects to first-generation Variants, juveniles, named monsters, and New Gods.

Outbreak Day-by-Day Timeline

This timeline follows the first days and weeks of the Hemorrhage Virus disaster from the buried VX-99 origin to the first countermeasures and city collapse.

July 10, 1968: Operation Burn Bright doses Trevor Brett and his Marines with VX-99. The supersoldier program creates the biological root of the future extinction chain.

Pre-outbreak modern era: Gibson and Medford continue the hidden program. Building 8 becomes the site where the old project mutates into modern catastrophe.

Outbreak Day 1: Team Ghost enters Building 8. Reed loses original team members and the first field proof of the outbreak escapes.

Early outbreak: Kate is extracted from Atlanta CDC. The scientific response moves to Plum Island.

Outbreak Day 16: Operation Depletion deploys VariantX9H9. The infection curve is broken but surviving infected become true Variants.

Following weeks: Operation Liberty attempts to retake New York. The military learns that Variants have adapted and gone underground.

Late Season 1: Operation Condor and Plum Island fall. Juvenile capture succeeds but triggers the rescue and final-war phase.

Endgame: Operation Extinction targets lairs and juveniles. Humanity survives the main Variant war at enormous cost.

Use outbreak-relative placement unless an exact date is supported by the book text. This topic is meant to explain sequence and consequence, not just order.

Connected Branch Timeline Overlay

The connected branches belong inside the actual history of the Extinction Cycle universe. The outbreak is not a random first-book event. It is the result of a military-science chain that begins in Vietnam with VX-99 and Trevor Brett, survives the Red Line era, resurfaces at Building 8, and then spreads into the main saga, Redemption, Survival, New Zealand, reconstruction, and Dark Age.

July 1968: VX-99 is tested in Vietnam

Operation Burn Bright is the first major historical break. Trevor Brett and thirty-one Marines are sent into Vietnam and ordered to inject VX-99. Brett survives the catastrophe as the White Ghost, proving that the drug can transform a human being into a durable, adaptive predator.

This is the beginning of the whole universe's biological history. Every later Variant, Alpha, Scion, Thrall, Chimera, hybrid branch, and New God threat sits downstream from the decision to use people as test subjects.

1980: the Red Line secret is pursued, recovered, and hidden

The Red Line era proves the Vietnam disaster did not end the program. Rick Gibson's circle and covert military command treat Brett as evidence and opportunity rather than as the reason to stop. Nick Womack's team and the White Ghost pursuit turn the old secret into a renewed institutional inheritance.

Chronologically, this is the bridge between the Vietnam origin and the modern outbreak. The system learns from Brett, but it learns the wrong lesson.

Decades before 2015: VX-99 survives inside classified research

The public story stays buried while VX-99 remains useful to the people who know the truth. The program's hidden continuity matters more than any single lab. It explains why Building 8 can exist at all and why modern command has enough old knowledge to keep making newer mistakes.

Immediate pre-outbreak: Building 8 fuses VX-99 to a contagious architecture

At Building 8 on San Nicolas Island, Dr. Isaac Medford works with VX-99 and an Ebola-based carrier. The Hemorrhage Virus turns the old mutation pathway into something transmissible. Rick Gibson and Medical Corps command know more than they reveal.

The outbreak starts here as a direct consequence of the old program. Building 8 is not just a laboratory accident. It is the old VX-99 history becoming contagious.

April 19, 2015: Team Ghost enters Building 8

Reed Beckham, Parker Horn, Alex Riley, Will Tenor, Carlos Spinoza, Jim Edwards, and Pat Ellis enter Building 8 under a mission frame that hides the full truth. The result destroys the original Ghost roster and sends Beckham, Horn, Riley, and Ellis into a war that began before they were born.

This is the main saga's ignition point: the hidden military-science history becomes a field trauma for Team Ghost.

April 19-21, 2015: public outbreak and branch stories begin

Once the virus leaves Building 8, the chronology splits into simultaneous human experiences:

Chicago exposes the outbreak as a public epidemic.

Atlanta brings Kate Lovato, Michael Allen, Pat Ellis, the CDC, and Team Ghost into the same survival path.

South Jamaica, Queens begins the Redemption branch through Meg Pratt and Tim Pratt on April 19, 2015.

New Zealand begins Jack and Dee Gee's separation and the family-survival arc that grows into the Renegades story.

Southern California begins the Survival branch as John Carver, Shrek, and Lost Valley face local collapse.

These are parallel starts to the same event. They are different windows into the same global failure.

Late April and early May 2015: Plum Island and VariantX9H9 change the war

After Atlanta, Plum Island becomes the main scientific refuge. Kate Lovato and Pat Ellis determine that the crisis is not simply curable infection. VariantX9H9 and Operation Depletion kill many infected, but survivors retain VX-99 changes and become the Variant population.

This is where the outbreak stops being only a disease chronology and becomes a war chronology.

Outbreak Year 0: the first war and connected branch escalation

Operation Liberty, the New York tunnel war, Fort Bragg, Plum Island's fall, Key West, Variant juveniles, and the D.C. endgame form the main first-war spine. Redemption adds the civilian New York record through Meg, Jed, Gallegos, firefighters, prisoners, and collaborators. Survival tracks Lost Valley, Carver, Shrek, Shader, Catalina, USS Freedom, and regional defense. New Zealand tracks Jack, Dee, Boss, the Renegades, and Operation Utu.

The branches matter because they show the same apocalypse at different scales: command war, city survival, family separation, camp defense, island reclamation, and local government.

End of first war and Outbreak Year +1: survival becomes unsafe recovery

Operation Extinction gives humanity a path through the first Variant war, but the world that follows is unstable. Extinction Aftermath, Extinction Lost, Extinction War, Missions, and later Redemption/Survival material show safe zones, Europe, ROT, naval crises, militias, refugee routes, and the first attempt to build real government again.

The first victory does not end the extinction cycle. It creates the fragile world that later enemies can attack.

Outbreak Years +1 to +7: reconstruction builds the target

The Allied States, outpost systems, Lost Valley's local order, post-Utu New Zealand recovery, and family households all become proof that people can rebuild. Reed and Kate raise Javier. Horn raises Tasha and Jenny. Fitz's Team Ghost carries the operating tradition forward.

This era matters because Dark Age is not attacking ruins. It is attacking a society that has started to believe in the future.

Outbreak Year +8: Dark Age reopens the extinction war

Outpost Turkey River, the election, Peaks Island, Outpost Portland, Fischer Fields, Mount Katahdin, Manchester, Operation Shadow, Puerto Rico, Lemke, Galveston, Los Alamos, and the USS Jan Ringgold belong to the second major crisis. The New Gods and webbing network reveal that Variant evolution has become organized enemy civilization.

Dark Age answers the question left by the first saga: what happens when the thing humanity thought it survived comes back smarter, more ideological, and better hidden?

Later New Zealand recovery: The Sixth Law

The Sixth Law belongs later in New Zealand's post-Utu recovery frame. Jack, Dee, Marco, Yalonda, Boss, the Renegades, the Keepers, Axiom, Project Aegis, hybrid Variants, and Soren show a country facing old ideologies and Variant-derived science after apparent reclamation.

Its exact conversion to the Allied States calendar remains approximate, but its story position is clear: it is a later recovery crisis in the same biological and political universe.

Chronological Order carries the full in-universe history from VX-99 through the Dark Age.

Trevor Brett is the first major VX-99 victim and the prototype warning the program refuses to obey.

Building 8 is where the old VX-99 chain becomes the Hemorrhage Virus outbreak.

Redemption New York City Arc follows the civilian New York view beginning April 19, 2015.

Extinction Survival follows Southern California, Lost Valley, Carver, Shrek, and community defense.

Extinction New Zealand follows Jack and Dee, the Renegades, Operation Utu, and later recovery.
