Premise
From the Ashes begins after the United States has chosen the unthinkable. Operation Reaper firebombs major cities in an attempt to stop the Hemorrhage Virus, killing enormous numbers of civilians along with infected. Detroit becomes the story's wound: a city burned by its own country and then entered by soldiers trying to save whoever remains.
The page's central tension is not soldiers versus civilians. It is compassionate soldiers working inside a strategy that has already committed mass violence. Arvin Malone, Melissa, and other survivors need military help to escape, but they also have to breathe the ash of what military command did.
Plot summary
Beginning
The story opens with survivors emerging from Cobo Center into a devastated Detroit. Arvin and Melissa see the remains of a city transformed by fire, smoke, and collapse. The People Mover is broken. Streets are ruined. CBRN-suited soldiers hold a perimeter where ordinary civic life used to be.
The survivors understand that the president gave the order. That fact changes the emotional shape of rescue. The people with rifles may be the only way out, but the flag behind those rifles has already burned the city around them.
