Family and training

Marco grows up with parents who survived the first Variant war and never fully stop preparing. Dee teaches him to hide, think, and obey urgent survival instructions. Jack and Ben's lessons shape his habits: know routes, save supplies, conceal scent, understand shelter, and act even when afraid.

That preparation does not make Marco hardened. It makes him capable. He is frightened during captivity, but he still pays attention and uses what he has been taught.

The Sixth Law arc

After the D'Urville convoy ambush, Marco hides with Dee in a drainage ditch and shearing shed. When Dee is hurt, he helps her and keeps watch. Moehau and the other Variants then capture mother and son, moving them into the Keepers' network.

At Axiom, Marco reveals that he has been saving useful supplies because Ben taught him to be ready to leave. That small action shows the continuity between the old survivor generation and the child born into its aftermath.

When Marco is separated from Dee, his role becomes tactical. At Burnham and Christchurch Airport, Boss uses Morse code to communicate through the hidden wall. Marco answers, confirming the captives' location and helping Boss, Hōne, and Riise rescue Alice, Leela, and the other prisoners.

Relationships

Jack Gee: Marco's father and survival teacher. Jack's pride in Marco is central to the epilogue.

Dee Gee: Marco's mother and protector during captivity. Dee's choices throughout the novel are shaped by keeping him alive.

Jack and Dee Gee: Marco is the point where their marriage becomes generational legacy.

Boss: Marco's rescuer. Their Morse-code exchange completes Boss's long chosen-family debt to Dee and Jack.

Personality and skills

Marco is curious, scared, observant, and braver than he realizes. He does not behave like a miniature adult. He behaves like a child whose parents and extended family have given him tools he can use under pressure.

Ending status

Marco survives, reunites with Jack and Dee, and receives the Bravery Star. His recognition confirms that the post-war generation is not only protected by the old survivors. It can act, signal, remember, and help others live.
