Overview
This glossary standardizes enemy terminology for the Extinction Cycle reference. The series uses multiple naming systems: scientific language, military shorthand, survivor slang, regional language, named monsters, and New Gods hierarchy. A useful reference preserves those differences rather than forcing every enemy into one flat list.
The most important rule is to mark whether a term is confirmed canon language or a descriptive label. Canon terms can be used in article titles without qualification. Practical labels can still be useful, but entries should note that they are organizational names created for clarity.
Taxonomy note
- Root biological category: Variant.
- Behavior categories: feral, pack, horde, nest-associated, trained, weapon-using.
- Leadership categories: Alpha, named Alpha, apex Alpha as a descriptive label, mastermind, prophet-level commander.
- Life-stage or species-continuity categories: juvenile, reproductive or breeder-related references, cocooned prey, nest systems.
- New Gods hierarchy: Prophet, Scion, Thrall, Chimera, collaborator, possible council-level leadership.
- Regional ecology: Rewera, Leyak, Abezi, Reaver, Wormer, Black Beetle, mole, beetle, weta, white-skinned forms, seaborne or aquatic forms.
- Non-Variant enemy support: human collaborators, raiders, cults, military conspirators, scientists who weaponize biology.
Variant
The standard term for humans transformed by VX-99 and the Hemorrhage Virus into predatory, altered beings. Base Variants are fast, strong, sensory-driven, cannibalistic, and highly dangerous even before hierarchy emerges.
- Status: Confirmed canon term.
- Context: Use as the root category. Link to VX-99, Hemorrhage Virus, and Variant Evolution.
Feral Variant
A practical label for ordinary or low-order Variants acting mainly through hunger, scent, sound, and pack impulse rather than visible command intelligence.
- Status: Descriptive descriptive label.
- Context: Useful when distinguishing uncontrolled hordes from Thralls, Scions, Alphas, or Chimeras.
Thrall Variant
A lower New Gods servant type. Thralls are predatory, trainable, and used as hunters or feeders, but they do not hold the status of Scions.
- Status: Confirmed Dark Age term.
- Context: Link to New Gods, Azrael, Scions, and Galveston Battle.
Pack
A group of Variants moving, hunting, feeding, or fighting together. Packs may be feral or controlled by an Alpha.
- Status: Descriptive and text-supported behavior.
- Context: Useful for field reports and side-story battle summaries.
Horde
A large mass of Variants. Hordes may be disorganized or directed by higher forms, depending on context.
- Status: Descriptive and common tactical term.
- Context: Use carefully. A horde is a number and behavior descriptor, not a rank.
Alpha
A dominant Variant leader capable of commanding packs, intimidating lesser Variants, selecting prey, and maintaining territory. Alphas are the first major visible hierarchy above ordinary Variants.
- Status: Confirmed canon term.
- Context: Link to Bone Collector, Trophy King, One Eye, and redheaded Alpha.
