Overview
This page must remain distinct from Variant Evolution. Evolution explains how the enemy changes. The webbing network explains how the Dark Age enemy communicates, coordinates, hides information, and becomes strategically vulnerable.
Plain-language definition
An organic command and communication infrastructure used by the New Gods and related Variant forms. It involves living tissue, electrical and biological signals, microelectric arrays, interface attempts, and biological fuel from captive bodies.
First major appearance
The network becomes central in Dark Age, after Kate, Sammy Tibalt, Dr. Carr, Ron, and Leslie begin treating the webbing as active tissue rather than passive nest material.
Why it matters
The webbing network gives the enemy reach. It lets Azrael's order coordinate, conceal, feed, process, and defend itself across multiple sites. It also gives Kate a new kind of war: biology as communications infrastructure.
Story evolution
At first the webbing reads as horror imagery tied to nests, cocoons, and enemy spaces. Scientific analysis turns it into a system. It can transmit signals, replicate aggressively, and interact with human-designed interfaces. The more the human scientists listen, the more the network reveals intelligence, encryption, and protected zones.
The network's dependence on living tissue makes it both grotesque and vulnerable. Cocoons and captives become fuel, signal, or storage. Anthrax becomes a possible counter-network attack because the system's own connected biology can spread contamination. The Los Alamos endgame turns the enemy's nervous system into a target.
Boundary notes
Do not use this page as a synonym for all Variant evolution. It is a late-stage infrastructure and communication concept.
Connection Map
Kate Lovato: Scientific interpreter. Moves from virology into biological network warfare.
Sammy Tibalt: Signal partner. Helps probe and decode the network.
Dr. Jeff Carr: Scientific partner. Helps analyze the biology and implications.
New Gods: Primary user. Use the network as command infrastructure.
