Overview
The New Gods are the late-stage enemy civilization that emerges in the Dark Age era. They are not simply another pack of Variants. They are the political, religious, biological, and military expression of Azrael's belief that VX-99 and later experimentation should replace ordinary humanity with a ruling post-human species. Their existence changes the conflict from survival against monsters into a war against a rival order that wants bodies, obedience, territory, children, and legitimacy.
The New Gods matter because they give the Variant threat a governing imagination. Earlier Variants hunt, nest, climb, feed, breed, and follow Alphas. Azrael goes further. He reframes mutation as destiny, calls himself the Prophet, calls his elevated followers Scions, treats unaltered humans as heretics, and presents submission as mercy. The result is an enemy that can feed like Variants, fight like soldiers, recruit like a cult, and threaten like a state.
Purpose and origin
The group's origin lies in the long chain that begins with VX-99, the Hemorrhage Virus, Variant evolution, surviving Alphas, mastermind biology, and Dark Age experimentation. The New Gods are the ideological endpoint of that chain. Azrael interprets the original military dream of improved killers as proof that ordinary humanity was meant to be replaced.
Their purpose is conquest through transformation. They do not only seek to kill humans. They seek to select some, elevate some, enslave some, and use the rest as labor, food, hostages, or political theater. This purpose makes them more dangerous than a horde because they can imagine a future after victory.
Membership
Confirmed membership layers include:

Scions: Elite transformed followers who use weapons, obey orders, guard prisoners, and operate as death-squad soldiers.
Thralls: Lower predatory servants, closer to trained monsters than ideological officers.
Leadership
Azrael is the movement's defining leader. He is not best treated as a normal Alpha, even though he shares dominance behavior. His role includes command, ideology, political negotiation through terror, and symbolic kingship. He functions as Prophet, commander, and proposed replacement sovereign.
Beneath Azrael, Scions appear to occupy the highest visible follower rank. Jonah is especially important because he gives the Scion layer a point of view. Chimeras serve as powerful battlefield assets. Human collaborators provide the skills the transformed bodies do not always possess: vehicles, radios, prisoner handling, local knowledge, experiments, and technology.

Major conflicts
The New Gods fight the Allied States politically and biologically. Their conflicts include attacks on outposts, use of collaborators to penetrate secure areas, operations tied to Puerto Rico and the First Fleet, the capture and execution of Vice President Dan Lemke, the assault on Galveston, and the wider struggle over Los Alamos and the webbing network.
They also fight an ideological war. Azrael tries to make surrender look like survival. Ringgold, Lemke, Beckham, Kate, Horn, Fitz, Sammy, Cornelius, Team Ghost, and the Allied States answer that survival without freedom is not victory.
Timeline of activity
Post-Extinction War shadow period: Surviving Variants and collaborators remain hidden while the Allied States assumes the old threat is dying off.
Early Dark Age: Outposts begin falling or going silent, revealing that enemies outside the walls are more organized than expected.
Network discovery period: Allied science identifies webbing, signals, masterminds, and command biology as a central part of the threat.
New Gods open war: Azrael's order uses Scions, Chimeras, Thralls, collaborators, seaborne attacks, and prisoners to attack the Allied States.
Relationships to other groups
The New Gods are directly opposed to the Allied States, Team Ghost, Marines, Rangers, Navy survivors, scientific teams, and local outpost communities. They depend on human collaborators. They inherit earlier Variant hierarchy from Alphas and masterminds. They are thematically linked to ROT because both movements use terror and propaganda to break Ringgold's legitimacy, though ROT remains human and political while the New Gods are biological and post-human.
