Types Of Transformation
VX-99 transformation
VX-99 begins as a military fantasy: make soldiers stronger, faster, and harder to kill. The first transformation fate is therefore a command failure. Trevor Brett's experience shows that the drug unlocks violence, sensory change, paranoia, predation, and loss of ordinary human restraint. The later Hemorrhage Virus disaster grows from this same foundation.

The modern outbreak turns infection into mass transformation. Tenor and Tim Pratt matter because their transformations are intimate. They are not anonymous infected. They are a teammate and a husband. Their deaths force Riley and Meg into the moral horror of recognizing someone they love and still understanding that the person cannot be saved in that moment.
Why It Matters
Transformation fates are the series' deepest horror. They collapse the boundary between victim and enemy. They also create the central ethical conflict for Kate Lovato: whether science should cure, kill, or weaponize what the government created. Every transformed person is a reminder that the Variants were once human, and every survivor who kills them has to live with that fact.
