R49 Grenades
R49 grenades are among the most important late-war field countermeasures because they give small teams a portable way to neutralize or slow monsters that.

What it is
R49 functions as a soldier-carried chemical or gas-delivery grenade used against Variants and juveniles. It is not treated like a casual explosive. Operators have to wear masks and check each other's gear because exposure is dangerous to humans as well as monsters.
First major appearance
R49 becomes important in the late original-war period, especially around the rescue and Operation Extinction sequences in Extinction End.
How it works in the story
In story terms, R49 buys time. It drops or incapacitates some enemy forms, covers movement, protects a retreat, and allows teams to approach prisoners or nest structures that would otherwise be unreachable.
Risks and limitations
R49 is dangerous because its useful effect depends on proximity, wind, masks, timing, and limited supply. Reed orders mask checks because the weapon can kill or incapacitate the wrong people if used carelessly. It also forces moral decisions when prisoners and monsters occupy the same chamber.
Major deployments
The most important deployment comes in the final nest and Operation Extinction material. Reed throws R49 toward juvenile concentrations and toward prisoners as a mercy measure before Garcia detonates the bomb. Fitz, Horn, Rico, Apollo, and Garcia all operate in the same environment where R49 becomes the only way to keep the team moving.
Story consequences
R49 is a perfect example of the series' war logic: the right tool can save lives, but it cannot remove grief or moral cost. Its use is tied to Beckham's catastrophic injury, Garcia's sacrifice, and the endgame against the juveniles.
Why it matters
R49 Grenades belongs in the science and equipment layer because the Extinction Cycle treats tools as choices, not props. Every countermeasure depends on the people who create it, authorize it, carry it, and survive its consequences.
