Origin and first appearance
The key discovery occurs during the Variant Hunters' Key West reconnaissance. Garcia's Force Recon team finds child-sized Variant corpses in the surf and discovers gill-like structures. The scene turns a sampling mission into a warning that evolution is outrunning military doctrine.
Physical traits
Aquatic Variants retain the sickly Variant features of pale or translucent flesh, yellow eyes, swollen lips, and predatory musculature, but add structures adapted for water. The gill-like tissue suggests that some forms can survive, hunt, or move in the ocean more effectively than expected.
Hunting behavior and command behavior
The bodies in the surf raise unsettling questions. Were they failed adaptations, scouts, dead juveniles, or evidence of a larger aquatic population? The ambiguity matters. Garcia does not have the luxury of waiting for full answers, so the reconnaissance becomes both sample recovery and tactical warning.
Major scenes and conflicts

Countermeasures and weaknesses
Countering aquatic forms requires maritime surveillance, drones, Navy assets, sampling discipline, and the recognition that beaches and ship approaches are not safe spaces. The lesson carries into every later naval and island defense problem.

Aquatic Variants matters because it shows that the Extinction Cycle enemy is not static. Every new form or named threat changes tactics, science, politics, or emotional stakes.
