Background and local role

Sunan is from Bangkok and has been brought into or assigned to Pattaya, where American servicemen, bars, sex work, drugs, and official corruption overlap. He is not impressed by the arrival of American assistance, and he immediately understands that politics may matter more than procedure.

His English allows him to work with Hal, but he remains the local expert. He knows which bars are protected, when witnesses are likely to lie, and why direct questioning may only produce fairy tales.

Investigation

Sunan investigates the murder of Sergeant Kyle Walkins and related killings, following leads about a white devil or white demon. He interviews witnesses, tracks Aranya, examines cattle remains, and reads scenes with a detective's eye even when resources and institutional support are weak.

He is practical rather than romantic. He knows that bar girls may know more than officials, that a doorman's monosyllables still count as information, and that tracks in mud may matter more than what superiors want reported.

Relationship with Hal

Sunan and Hal become an effective pair because each supplies what the other lacks. Hal has American access and military context. Sunan has local knowledge, skepticism, and investigative instincts. Their banter often hides the seriousness of their situation, especially as both begin to suspect that the case touches corruption higher than either can safely challenge.

After Hal shoots Sunan during the confrontation, their hospital exchange keeps the tone darkly human. Sunan jokes about being shot, but he also recognizes the price of what they learned.
