Identity and Role
Piero Angaran is an Italian soldier and survivor from the European campaign. He is associated with Rome, the 4th Alpini Parachutist Regiment, Antonio LoMaglio, juvenile Varianti, repellent, the European Unified Forces, and the later Paris/European front.
Chronological Story Arc
In Extinction Aftermath, Piero and Antonio are among the last remnants of their unit in Rome. They survive on stimulants, scavenged supplies, repellent, and discipline after the mission to retake the city fails. Rome itself becomes a character through Piero’s memories: childhood trips, food, history, churches, bridges, markets, and ancient streets now filled with nests and bones.
The bridge pursuit defines Piero’s emotional arc. The two men are chased by armored juveniles, use repellent, jump into the Tiber, and nearly reach safety. A winged creature and swimming juveniles overtake Antonio. Piero is forced into the nightmare logic of the new world, where mercy can mean a bullet for a friend.
Later material keeps Piero tied to the European campaign and to the author’s own note that books six and seven follow him and his pet mouse through Rome. His survival is not triumph. It is testimony.

Why It Matters
Piero Angaran matters because the Extinction Cycle is built from cause and consequence. This character changes how readers understand the war, the science, the politics, or the cost of survival. A surface-level entry loses the part fans actually remember: the scenes, choices, losses, and ripple effects that keep the name alive after the chapter ends.
Final Known Status or Consequences
Piero survives the Rome opening arc and remains the key European survivor perspective across the later main-series European material.
