Role in the investigation
Hal works with Sunan after the Thai authorities are told they will receive American assistance. He helps follow leads tied to Sergeant Kyle Walkins, Aranya, cattle mutilation, and the so-called white devil or white demon. His military background gives him access and pressure, but he is also constrained by orders and classified information.
He is placed in an uncomfortable position because he knows more than he can tell Sunan. The secrecy does not help the investigation. It makes partnership harder.
Relationship with Sunan
Hal and Sunan begin from cultural distance and suspicion, then develop a working respect. Sunan is dry, experienced, and cynical about corruption. Hal is more idealistic at first but gradually becomes just as disturbed. Their conversations mix humor, professional frustration, and the sense that neither man's institution is clean.
The relationship survives physical danger, including the incident in which Hal shoots Sunan while stopping the killer. Their hospital conversation afterward is rueful and honest: Sunan jokes about being shot, and Hal accepts the cost of knowledge.
Disillusionment
Hal joined the Marines from a sense of duty and honor, but the case forces him to confront another reality. He believes a colonel may be tied to the drug ring and that official channels may try to silence him. He decides he is done with that world, plans to head to Bangkok, and expects to run out the clock through R&R or stateside reassignment.
This makes Hal one of the prequel-side figures who recognizes institutional failure before the main series catastrophe. He cannot fix it, but he can no longer pretend it is honorable.
