Outpost life

Flathman is stationed at Deadwood or Outpost 46 in the reviewed continuity. He deals with bored weeks, dwindling liquor, uncertainty about Kryptonite, and the knowledge that humans are losing. He also has a field streak, driving an SUV through Variant danger and earning an Evel Knievel-style joke from his men.

This combination of irreverence and duty defines him. He is not impressed by threats, but he is not careless about his responsibilities.

Command-chain crisis

After Central Command is compromised and Kennor and Harris are reported dead, Colonel Wood contacts Flathman and claims that Flathman now reports to him. Flathman immediately questions whether Wood reports to General Johnson, because Harris had named Johnson in the succession chain. Wood responds with threats and authority language, which only deepens Flathman's suspicion.

Flathman decides to call General Johnson directly, even joking that he may get relieved for it. Johnson confirms that Offutt has fallen, Central Command has moved, and all bases now report to him. He orders Flathman to disregard Wood and report any future Wood orders.

Narrative significance

Flathman matters because the fate of a country is often decided by mid-level people who choose which order to obey. He is not at the center of Ringgold's presidency or Team Ghost's missions, but his decision shows that legitimacy survives only if officers at the edges recognize it.
